Halloween Party!

The girls voted to have a Halloween party at their next meeting!  They wanted to be responsible for planning and organizing their party.  Please have your daughter bring a snack to share, a game to play, or a craft to do with her friends.  Thanks!

First Aid Badge

Last week the girls earned their First Aid badge.  We had a special guest, my aunt, who is a nurse and helps run the 9 Health Fair.  She did a great job with the girls!  The Brownies learned a lot and had fun!

Here's a breakdown of what we did...

1.  We talked about how and when to call 911.  The girls learned it's very important to stay on the phone until the person from 911 tells them it's ok to hang up the phone.  We also did some role playing so the girls could practice calling 911.

2.  The girls got to ask my aunt all kinds of questions about the 9 Health Fair, what it's like being a nurse, and anything else on their minds.  We also talked about how to stay safe.  The girls home work was to go home and talk to their family about a family meeting place in case of a fire --  a mailbox, the neighbors house (as long as your parents know that's where you're going to meet them), a lamp post, etc.

3.  Next the girls learned how to treat minor injuries.  The girls also learned what to do for burns, dog & cat bites, sprained ankles, broken bones, scrapes, how to put on a band-aide, RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevate).  The girls also learned how to put on & the proper way to take off the rubber gloves so they don't have to touch another person's blood.

4.  Then we talked about how prevention is a great way to stay safe --  using sunscreen, using bug spray, being aware of your surroundings, etc.  The girls also learned how to treat a sunburn, bug bites, bee stings, and ticks.

We talked about tricks for being safe in the wilderness.  The girls learned how to  use sticks and cloth to make a splint if someone gets hurt while hiking.  They practiced putting their arms around each other's shoulders to help someone who's injured hobble out of the woods.  We also talked about the importance of having 2 adults on hikes - one to stay with the girls & one to go get help.

5.  Finally the girls made their own first aid kit to keep in their back packs.  It includes band-aides, alcohol wipes, and rubber gloves.  Things they could use if they skin their knees on the way home from school.  They should let a parent or trusted adult know if they ever use anything from their first aid kits.

It was a fun meeting & the girls learned a lot!

We're looking forward to seeing the girls next week when we tackle the bug badge!

Upcoming Events

To keep you all in the loop, here are some of the upcoming events for the girls this month.

1.  Cookies - Thanks to a few extra cookies purchases and troop transfers we have been able to get rid of our remaining cookies!  Andrea and I are working on submitting the rewards for each girl.  I'm going to assume the girls want the prizes.  If you would prefer the cookie credit (to be used towards camps, etc) let me know ASAP. I need to submit the rewards by Friday.

2.  March 11 Meeting  - Next week the girls will be earning their First Aid badge.  Thank you Tara for graciously volunteering to help me since Jennifer will be out of town.  My Aunt helps run the 9 Health Fair and will be our special guest!  I'm very excited to have her join us next week.  She is amazing with kids and I think the girls are really going to enjoy it!

3.  March 25 Meeting  - Since cookies are done, we are going to try to get 2 meetings in this month!  We are planning a field trip to Growing Gardens in Boulder for this meeting.  We will be meeting in their Children's Peace Garden for the girls to earn their Bugs badge.  The field trip will run from 4:15-5:30.  The troop will pay for the girls.

If you're able, please plan to join us.  We could use some parents to help drive kids & help chaperon this event.  Siblings are welcome.  Let me know if your other kids will be joining us, so I can give them a head count.  You will be responsible for the $4/kid admission fee for siblings.

See you next week!

Snack Badge

This week the girls earned their snacks badge!  First we talked about the difference between healthy and unhealthy snacks, why it is important to eat healthy, and what makes food healthy.  The girls are so smart and already knew how to make healthy food choices.  Thanks to Kiara, we even learned the Spanish word for cucumber -- pepino!

Then we played with our food!  The girls were offered a variety of fruits and vegetables and got to create their own picture using the foods available.  We have some creative girls!   The girls shared their food art.  We had some faces, faces with fancy earrings, people, crabs, flowers, a swing set, ... Then they had fun eating their creations!

Jennifer treated the girls to an Apple Julep to drink.  Most of the girls were excited to try a variety of fruit juices mixed together (apple juice, orange juice, pineapple juice and a little lemon juice).  A few were a little hesitant about the idea.  We were so proud of the girls, they all tried the apple julep and loved it!

Next the girls talked about making snacks to eat on the go.  We had some yummy treats for them to mix up and make their own trail mix.  It was fun to hear all the different varieties of trail mix the girls make at home and make with their grandmas.

We ended with a food in disguise.  We took ice cream cones and filled them with plain Greek yogurt. Then the girls topped their treat with grapes, a strawberry, and sprinkles.  They looked just like fancy ice cream cones.  The girls loved them!

The girls took home their snack badge and the two cookie badges they earned at the last meeting. See you this weekend at the cookie booth sales!

Next, we will be working in the first aide badge.

See you this weekend at the cookie booth sales!
